Upcoming Dates!

These are the dates we have for outings and meetings

March 27- meet at Double Daves at 5p- eat and leave at 6p to travel to Sid.  If you don’t get there at 5p I understand but would like everyone to eat before we leave and since this is our fundraiser would be good to see every ones support.

April 2nd, and 16th Training at 7p-8p at Hewitt park unless the weather does not permit

April 24-26 hike 20 miler.  I need to see the outing check list by April 14 if you are planning the trip

If we had our meet n greet in April at 4p would that allow anyone going to Conclave to return?

May 7th and 21st Training at 7p-8p at Hewitt park unless the weather does not permit

May 29-31 Backpacking trip- need to see the outing by May 12 if you are planning to get credit.

June 4th and will have to work around summer camps for other training.

June 26-29 for outing list by June 9th if you are planning.

July 19th meet, shake down of packs, turn in packs to be loaded for the trip.  You can bring your travel bag Saturday 25 when we leave.

If you have not planned an outing using the outing planner you can not get credit for a written plan towards the merit badge.  I only have a few plans and since there are not enough outing left for everyone to plan an outing and us take the outing I will give you credit if you come up with 4 separate planned outings and have the information to me by May 7th  meeting. You can print and bring to the meeting or email me.

If you have question please email or call.

Georgetown Hike Notes

I have had responses from the majority of the members going and it looks like we will be meeting on Thursdays.

The time will be 6:30 or 7:00 we will let Mr. Lockridge decide since he will be traveling the farthest. The first meeting will be on March 19.  I will have to find a location for us to meet so will let you know on March 17.  I will be out of town during spring break.

Below is something Kevin, Christian and Donna put together after our Georgetown hike:

What did I/we learn this weekend during the Georgetown backpack trek:

Check the weather where are going to be prepared for the weather. Rain, cold

Pack my bag at least the week prior to the trip to have everything ready to go.

Mandatory to travel in scout uniform

Bring eating spoon/bowl/ cup in a bag that can go in bear bag and stay together with my name on it

Put clothes in a stuff waterproof bag it is easier and faster to pack in the morning

Tent needs to be in a bag if it is going to be carried on the outside of my pack

Bring a bag to keep my personal things in that can stay in the vehicle so it is easier to keep up with my things

Have good shoes and socks

Cut toe nails short prior to hike

Lightweight pants such as Magellan (which can be purchased at Academy) are great to put snacks in

Blue jeans should not be worn backpacking

I need to have rain gear for pack. REI had on sale last I checked for around $8.00

No one wants to hear me complain about anything

We need to get ready to go in the morning so we don’t miss our Philemon activity and Mr. Lockridge does not leave us.

Hiking with a pack all day is not the same as doing other physical training

Need to practice setting up gear and cooking Philmont style meals

French vanillas mousse taste like cheesecake and is great with freeze-dried strawberries

It is very important to set up camp together and have a plan that has been practiced

When boiling water is ready in the morning my tent should be down and I need to be ready to eat

If I want more food I need to speak up and make sure that I am heard

At start of pack break is the time to take care of medical needs or restroom needs not at the end of the break

If I want trek poles I need to bring them and keep up with them

Label everything because almost everything will be in the bear bag at night

Not everyone will be bringing a knife

I need to know what trek gear I am carrying and always carry the gear with out being told each day.

Nothing should dangle from my pack as I walk

Water breaks are 5 min and pack breaks are 10 min

What to expect during a shake down

What 35 lbs. feels like after a 12-mile hike

A hot shower feels great after a great weekend of hiking and fellowship
